Buttressed by many strongly defined supporting performances, this is a much-needed hit for Covent Garden, rapturously and deservedly acclaimed. CD (Compact Disc) Der Rosenkavalier (Heritage) by Strauss / Orchestra of Royal Opera House / Davis 3 units. However lovely, elegant and, dare we say, rosy Richard Strauss’s most popular opera may be, as an opera house, you can soon find yourself in a thorny situation. Sophie Bevan makes a perfectly gorgeous Sophie and the excellent Matthew Rose is a memorably unpleasant Ochs – more vicious bully than rustic buffoon. Cast Marschallin, Renée Fleming / Octavian, Alice Coote / Sophie von Faninal, Sophie Bevan / Baron Ochs, Matthew Rose / Faninal, Jochen Schmeckenbe.

The orchestra, on terrific form, is put through its paces and must have been shattered by the end. It is also splendidly conducted by Andris Nelsons – once past that dratted hurly-burly prelude, he gives the score a brilliantly mercurial reading, alert to its delicacies of orchestration and virtuosic figuration.
